Hi Lovelies! Happy Holidays! I hope everyone is having a great holiday season so far and enjoying their last few days of the year. It’s hard to believe that 2014 is almost over and 2015 is here.. I have my 10 year high school reunion next year! I can’t believe it’s been 10 years already. I hope that everyone has stayed active and healthy over this holiday season and don’t get down on yourselves for indulging, you deserve it! I have definitely had some indulgences this month like Tres Leches cake and chocolate cake on my birthday and some other delicious deserts! No one is perfect :). I am on break for school right now so I finally have some free time to play with recipes and post a quick blog. It has been a rough quarter and I hear the next two are even harder but it’s all worth it in the end!
Today I want to share my quick and easy granola recipe. This recipe is nutritious and also low in sugar. Did you know that the typical granola you buy at the store or at a restaurant is full of sugar and butter?! Meaning tons of extra calories when you think you’re being good and healthy. I remember watching the cooks make it at the restaurant I used to work at and was shocked at the sticks of butter and multiple cups of sugar they were throwing in. From that day on I never touched granola again. But not to fear! I have the perfect recipe for you and it takes all of 5 minutes to make. This recipe is low in sugar but also satisfying so you can’t feel bad at all. Did you know that sugar is the new cigarettes? It is one of the main causes leading to obesity and type 2 diabetes along with processed foods. Have you ever noticed after you start eating a sugar filled snack (and sugar is added to everything now days!) that you can’t stop? You actually get more hungry even though you’re full? It actually triggers the ghrelin hormone which is the hormone that tells your brain you’re hungry and inhibits the leptin hormone, the hormone that tells your brain you’re full. Fructose is the worst of all kinds. It gets stored as fat immediately. It goes straight to the liver which turns it into triglycerides that get stored as fat. Other sugars enter the blood stream before the liver. It also breaks down collagen when it bonds with protein which can be aging. And who wants that? Coconut nectar and honey are low in fructose and are also packed with other vitamins and minerals and have other health benefits! Also feel free to add anything else to the mix like dried fruit, almonds, etc. But do be careful to not eat the whole thing in one sitting. You may be tempted too because it’s so yummy!
